Rising from the ashes of Lionhead, PixelCount is now making its first indie game, Kynseed, where the land murmurs with myth and fantastical beings tread.Kynseed is set in the Quill, a leafy country of villages and vales surrounded by forest. You can explore it at your leisure while farming the land and running a business, though there is more to Kynseed than living a quiet life. Monsters dwell deep within the trees, and the people of the Quill are a little strange too.“Quill is a land where people have reverted to ancient pagan ways,” says PixelCount cofounder and design director Charlton Edwards.

“They worship the old Fae deities, and superstitions and folktales are all true! Sacrifices, dances, odd customs and daily offerings are all part of Quill life. It’s a world where the ancient proverb rules.”Alongside eccentric locals, such as gatekeeper Herbert Lemon and cattery owner Hazel Nutt, there are four types of Fae who visit from different realms. One of these Fae is the jolly but sinister Mr Fairweather, who offers you a mysterious acorn called the Kynseed. Once planted, it grows into a family tree that feels like it’s watching over every decision you make.Inspired by tales of superstition, each village in the game has its own personality, from the grumpy Puritans of Tunt to the pie lovers of Poppyhill. The denizens of the dark forests have also been plucked from British and Irish folklore, combining recognisable creatures, such as banshees and dragons, with stranger ones that I’m forced to Google, with enticing names like the barghest, fachan and gwyllion.This love for fairytales and folklore has influenced the team from a young age, in particular Edwards who found magic in every corner of his hometown.“I grew up in a market town in North Yorkshire which was surrounded by old abbeys, druidic stones, moors and pine forests,” says Edwards. “I became obsessed with tales of the supernatural: ghost dogs that foretold deaths; chairs that would curse you when you sat on them. The Wicker Man is a great influence, too—I loved the customs, the corn dolls, the hare references, the weird door knockers, the green man imagery and the folksy music.”Pastoral paradiseThe rural landscape of The Wicker Man has ebbed into the visual style of the game, which depicts an abundant landscape befitting a fantasy novel or nature guide to a fairy realm. And though there are thematic similarities with the Fable series, making Kynseed has enabled the team to design a game on a much more personal scale.Edwards says, “We wanted a lush, detailed world that got away from the angular tileset look a lot of RPGs do. We made Fable ’s world in an organic way and we wanted to continue that approach with Kynseed. Most of the trees in Quill are unique and painstakingly assembled; every patch of flowers is hand-placed. This ensures that our world feels lovingly crafted and detailed.”Although you can spend your time pursuing a reputation as a monster slayer, you can also focus on more relaxing ventures, such as building a tavern, or running an apothecary. Every ingredient has certain traits, from flatulence to shrinking, curse trumpeting to courage.

KYNSEED PLAYER’S GUIDEHello and welcome to a little guide for the prototype of Kynseed, which may help you get the most from the demo.WARNING: CONTAINS SPOILERSCONTROL TIPS:The right control stick lets you aim with the Slingshot, Lantern, Throwing and Fishing.Hold X, B or Y (1,2,3 on keys) to open the radial menu for that button. From here you can change categories and cycle through items to assign to that button.Tapping X, B or Y (1,2 or 3) will put away the item carried so you don’t run around holding it. Tap that button again to bring it to hand.RB (shift) sprints, but if you go to the Pause menu, you can toggle Always Run, which will then make RB a walk button as you will default to running (better for keyboard players).Throwing, casting etc is analogue, so the longer you hold the Use button, the further it will go.Left Trigger will show Status of anything relevantso you can see names, crop growth status and moods etc.

Use this to discover where roots and other interactive elements are.Pay attention to the bottom right when using Tools as it will show any controls you can do.FISHING:Level Up the fishing rod by catching 5 fish. You can now hook most objects, especially Proverbs.Try and land the hook as near to the fish shadow as possible.When you see a! The fish will come for your line. Reel in when you hear the munch and see the little particles.Each pond has different fish types.Most types of fish go to bed at 9pm.Silverscale fish are found in the pond just below the Nook entrance, where the Whistelroot is also found.PROVERBS:Pay attention to Proverbs to help you locate rarer items etc.Some Proverbs are hidden off the map edge or in ponds.You need to find the Proverb to unlock Traits. Traits may appear before unlocking, but until you have the knowledge of them, then any items with that Trait will just have???GROWING STUFF:Stand on a soil square and hold the interact button to bring up the planting options and choose any seed you have to plant.Watering is basic right now. You can use the Watering Can and just fill up the blue bars.Rain will act as a watering can.Use Left Trigger Status control to see the growth of crops.Tomatoes do not need watering and will regrow after being picked without you needing to replant them.Wheat does not need watering.Crops ripen after 3 days if watered every day.You can use the Sickle to cut crops much more quickly.INTERACTIONS:Hold interact (A on gamepad) when you see a green target arrow to interact with animals or NPC’s. Then choose the option required.For NPC’s the 4 options are.Talk, Gift/Trade, Query and Cancel.The Query option lets you find out info on items, up to 3 per day from your father.For animals the 4 options arePet/Ride, Feed, Follow, Cancel.If an animal is stalking you, then you have accidentally selected Follow.

Select that icon again to make the animal stop following you.Pigs need to be happy to be ridden.Gassy apples can inflate animals, but only pigs can be popped. Inflated pigs can also be ridden (and that will be useful further into development)FAE REALM MINIGAME:Try to land on the Green targets to get an extra ball.Smaller targets are worth more.Use the stone paving to line up shots.There are 3 prizes that will appear on the table.To access the Minigame realm, you need Darklight. Get this by gifting pork or fish to the strange stone to the right of the middle pond in Dreamers Nook. To use Darklight, turn on your lantern and click in the Right Stick (key controls are listed onscreen) and the lantern light will turn dark green. Stand on the henge to the sounth of the farm and it will activate the teleport. Hold Interact to teleport.MISCWhen you win the Magic Bean from the minigame, take it to the very top of the Nook.

Plant it as you would a seed in the soil patch between the 2 henge stones. Then you need to water that patch and a vine will instantly appear. Hold A to climb.At the top of the Magic Bean vine is a recipe for a Shrinking Trait meal and 3 jars of Little Sap.Eat the Shrinking meal or feed it to an animal or dad to shrink them.When you are shrunken, you can ride the dog.Get the dog to Follow you when you have the Shovel (found by the pig pen).

When the dog says Woof Woof, look for a dirt mound and dig there.Use a jar (found by digging) when near insects to capture them. You can then store, collect or let go. Try collect them all!Jars and buckets can be poured out. Honey poured will attract bees and milk will attract the cat.Use the Slingshot to pop inflated pigs.Your task money is left next to your bed each day.The Lantern and Slingshot are found in your house.If you stay on the Toilet you will see various fart text.Sometimes dad farts very loudly when on the toilet.To stay awake after 11pm, you need Nightberries. These are found near the start area from 9pm onwards on a berry bush.Eaten raw, Nightberries keep you awake til 2am, and in the Sleeper’s Zest meal til 5am.There are 2 Whistleroot bushes. One by the Silverscale fish pond and 1 in the Nook. The root is a red oval thing with a yellow centre and appears at midnight.
